Berlin
History
After the Nazi terror and the end of World War II the city was finally devastated in 1945. The four allies divided Berlin in four parts: the East was administered by the Soviet Union, the Southwest by the USA, the West by Great Britain and the Northwest by France. With the Berlin blockade in 1948, the city became object of the Soviet-American conflict; Americans and British supplied the three West sectors via Luftbrucke with "Candy Bombers". In East and West Berlin the reconstruction began. The construction of the Berlin Wall on Aug 13, 1961 set the seal on the city's division and separated its people. The city celebrated on Nov 9, 1989 when the Berlin Wall was torn down. After there unification in 1990 Berlin became residence of the Federal Government, which held its first plenary session in the redesigned Reichstag on Apr 19, 1999.
On Berlin´s 750th birthady in 1987 people said: „One city-two worlds". Today you could say „one city - many worlds": from the industrial locations in Siemensstadt to the Turkish bazaars in Kreuzberg, from the patterns of Jewish life in Mitte to the flair of a metropolitan city around the House of Word Cultures, from the museum metropolis betwen Museum Island, the Cultural Forum and the museum world beyond Europe in Dahlem. Berlin is a magnet for anybody open to new ideas, who thinks creativly, acts tolerantly and is flexible enough. Most cities have only one center. Berlin has free.
Because the city was divided for so many years, today we have a Western city center, around Kurfürstendamm, an Eastern city center betwen Pariser Platz and Alexander Platz and, on the no man´sland where the Wall once stood, our third center: the area surronding the Postdamer Platz, the government quarte rand the Hauptbahnhof. The best way to get a taste of Berlin´s Unixe atmosphere is to take many different routes and look at it from variol perspectives: by foot, by bus, by boat and by bicycle. Berlin has a well-developed network of bike paths. The lively atmosphere of the capital and its surroundings is fascinating. Berlin is an inspiring city particularly for young people who are looking for knowledge, success in business or cultural enjoyment. Berlin has something for every taste and visit is always worthwhile. A big welcome to Berlin, the City of innovation!
